Good Versus Evil

Just when our modern society had drifted into the twilight dreamland of “Everything is relative,” “All roads lead to heaven,” and “Who am I to say someone else’s viewpoint is wrong,” we were rudely awakened from our slumber by the sound of two airliners smashing into our tallest buildings. We saw the images and could almost smell the smoke, feel the dust, and hear the cries of our fellow citizens being incinerated or jumping to their deaths.

On 9/11 we were reminded that while much is gray, there is black and white. There is good. And there is evil. We were attacked by Evil. Not some nameless, faceless force but by evil personified in Atta, Bin Laden, and Co.

We are not a perfect nation. But in the global war on terror, we are on the side of Good. This Good personified in the men we have sent to the front. Men like John Gebhardt. john-gebhardt.jpg

Chief Master Sgt. John Gebhardt cradles a young Iraqi girl as they both sleep in the hospital. The girl’s entire family was executed by insurgents. The killers shot her in the head but she survived. The girl received treatment at the U.S. military hospital in Balad, but cries often. According to nurses at the facility, Chief Gebhardt is the only one who can calm down the girl, so he holds her at night while they both sleep in a chair. Chief Gebhardt was assigned to the 332nd Expeditionary Medical Group at Balad Air Base, Iraq.

We have awakened from our slumber but thanks to the bravery of the American Military and the compassion of warrier soldiers like John Gebhardt this little Iraqi girl can get some sleep.

There is a principle at work here: “Overcome evil with good.” We will win because we are on the side of Good.
