HAGEL HOUND: If the Beast is Hungry. . .
NBC is now reporting that Sir Charles of Nebraska is considering running for President as an independent.
Someone pinch the Hound. Can it really be? Hagel running for President as an independent? We know our man well, but would he actually buy himself a one-way ride into the black hole of American Politics that also took Ross Perot and Ralph Nader from view? Completely fumble any possibility of running for the Senate in Nebraska again? And all by his own hand? Could there be any better bone for the Hound?
But alas, the experienced Hounds among us know that such news is surely too good to be true. Our Senior Senator’s modus operandi has not been exactly a tricky bird to sniff out.
Give our man a good case of the Sunday Morning Shakes, make him miss a few news cycles, leave him out of a couple important discussions and good ole’ Charlie is more predictable than a lead on the Iraq war written by Christiana Amanpour.
Supply him a little solitude and our lonely Senator will pretty much do or say anything for his next megalomaniacal meal: a cheap headline shot at W. here, a puff piece with Chris Matthews there.
But the Hound’s hunch is that this most recent announcement may be telling us a bit about our man’s current hunger pangs. Surely his recent “I am announcing that I am not announcing” debacle has put him into such a way with his base — ABC, NBC and CBS — that our man is not just hankering for a bite to eat. This is a man of big appetites, and he is starving.
We can only hope that under the current conditions it will take something like this latest gambit — a no-party run for President — to keep up his membership at the Washington Press Corp Ego Buffet. And the Hound says: If the Beast is hungry, please, Washington, please,
FEED THE BEAST.
