Why Haven’t They Hit Us Again?
Since the start of the Iraq war, I have had the strong sense that what we are doing in Iraq is inherently right. Aside from liberating an oppressed people from the hands of a despot which is incredible enough on its own, I believe that 20 years from now historians will look back on President Bush’s decision to take the fight to the enemy and see it as amazingly farsighted and strategic. By putting American troops on so-called Muslim soil, the jihadists have turned their focus from flying planes full of fuel into New York City skyscrapers to ridding their holy land of the infidels.
Remember the sense you had when the Twin Towers were hit: nothing like this had ever been conceived of and surely something terrible like this will soon happen again. We all realized that as a free and open society, the United States is completely vulnerable. What would be next: suicide attackers driving 18 wheelers full of fuel or fertilizer into football stadiums full of people?
Why haven’t we been hit again? Surely we owe a great deal to our tireless protectors in the FBI, ATF, CIA, and all levels of law enforcement. But we owe our greatest debt to our military. By taking the fight to the enemy they have secured America for these last 4 years. There can be no doubt that by capturing and killing the Al Qaida leadership we have severely weakened the jihadists. By taking the fight to them, they are no longer able to train openly nor plan without regard to when they will be disrupted.
Is there any doubt that if we had not taken the fight to the enemy that the enemy would have brought the fight to our shores again? Doesn’t it make more sense to fight the enemy with well-trained men in Kevlar vests with night vision goggles and big guns — rather than with men and women with brief cases and Blackberries sitting at their desks in tall office buildings.
God bless George W. Bush and the American Military. God bless America.
